Message for U.S. Citizens: Updated Restrictions for Eastern Border Crossing

December 15, 2023

Location: Finland, countrywide

Event: Finnish authorities have announced the closure of the entire eastern border after a temporary reopening of the Vaalimaa and Niirala eastern border crossings. This measure will begin at 8 p.m. on December 15, 2023, and remain in effect until January 14, 2024. During this month-long period, all land border crossing points between Finland and Russia will be closed. U.S. Embassy Helsinki anticipates the following status for Finland/Russia ports of entry:

· The Vaalimaa, Nuijamaa, Imatra, Niirala, Vartius, Kuusamo, Salla, and Raja-Jooseppi border crossing points are all closed until January 14, 2024.

You can find the latest border crossing status and requirements for entry to Finland from the Finnish Border Guard’s website.

The U.S. government’s ability to provide routine or emergency services to U.S. citizens in Russia is severely limited, particularly in areas far from the U.S. embassy in Moscow, due to Russian government limitations on travel for U.S. embassy personnel and staffing, and the ongoing suspension of operations, including consular services, at U.S. consulates in Russia.

At this time, U.S. citizens are advised not to travel to Russia.  More information on the State Department’s Level 4 Travel Advisory (Do Not Travel) can be found on travel.state.gov.

Actions to Take:

· Monitor local media for updates.

· Do not travel to Russia. · Review the State Department’s Russia Departure site for further information.
