Appointments & Locations

  • Passports services are in high demand, so please plan ahead by scheduling your appointment early to avoid delays.
  • All appointments must be scheduled through our online scheduling system, with the exception of life or death emergencies involving the traveler. In that case, please email us.
  • If you are unable to book a suitable appointment time, we suggest checking our website daily for cancellations and openings. We are not able to respond to scheduling-related emails (except for life or death emergencies involving the traveler).
  • Travel to the United States with an expired passport: If you are overseas and your passport expired on or after January 1, 2020, you may be able to use your expired passport to return directly to the United States until June 30, 2022.

Appointment Tips

  • You must make an appointment for each individual (e.g., a family comes to the Embassy: both parents are applying for passports, two children are applying for Consular Reports of Birth Abroad and passports, and a third child is applying for a passport: the family needs to schedule five separate appointments on the same day).
  • The appointment website generates a password that permits you to change or cancel appointments. The program does not permit users to retrieve lost passwords, so please make a note of your password.
  • You must arrive at the American Citizen Services section at your appointment time with completed forms and supporting evidence. Review our list of prohibited items before your visit (security restrictions). The U.S. Embassy will cancel your appointment if you arrive unprepared or late.

Return Envelope Requirement

A self-addressed envelope with correct postage is required.

  • You must bring an envelope to your appointment so that we can mail you your new passport.
  • Failure to provide a return envelope at the time of your appointment will likely result in delay to passport delivery.
  • Local mail delivery options include: Regular mail with Finnish postage stamps, All-in-one pre-paid envelopes, express pre-paid envelopes, and registered letters (kirjattu kirje in Finnish). You can request a tracking number from the postal service in order to track Express envelopes and registered letters. Tracking numbers are recommended.
  • Your mailing option should include an envelope large enough to fit two passports, contain postage to cover 250g, and contain your mailing address as the recipient.

Processing Times

  • Most customers receive their new passports in 4-6 weeks from appointment/payment date.
  • To check the status of a pending passport application, click here.
  • We will not reply to status inquiry requests until it has been more than 6 weeks after your appointment/payment date.

Reasonable Accommodation

If you need reasonable accommodation for your appointment, we encourage you to request your accommodation immediately once you schedule your appointment. We make every effort to provide accommodations to persons with disabilities and medical conditions. Reasonable accommodations vary, depending on the situation and the person’s needs.
Examples of accommodations include, but are not limited to:

    • If you require a private appointment due to a medical condition or disability, we may schedule an alternative time for you to come in for your interview.
    • If you or your child has special needs that requires a private appointment in a quiet space without distractions, we may schedule an alternative time for you or your family to come in for your interview.
    • If you are unable to speak, you may be allowed to respond to questions in an agreed-upon nonverbal manner such as using pen and paper.
    • If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you may bring a sign language interpreter to translate during the interview if needed.
    • If you have low vision, we may provide you with communications in large print.

If you are unable to provide fingerprints because of a medical condition, including birth defects, physical deformities, skin conditions, you may qualify for a fingerprint waiver for certain fingers.

  • Interview waivers are only granted in extreme situations, such as having a medical condition that requires flying in an air ambulance.

The waiting room of the Consular Section and its restroom is wheelchair-accessible.
