Holiday: Juneteenth on June 19, 2023
U.S. Embassy Finland is closed on Monday, June 19, 2023, in observance of Juneteenth.
The federal holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, signed earlier by President Abraham Lincoln, which freed enslaved people. Today, Juneteenth is a day to recognize the contributions of Black Americans and their resilience.
